Frequently Asked Questions

How big of a space does it cover?

The short answer is 1,500 square feet.  The long answer is it depends on several factors such as, how many air changes per hour you want.  For example, given Aspen's pollen CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of 442 CFM and smoke CADR of 373 CFM we can calculate the room size (assuming 8 foot ceilings) for different air changes per hour.  An air change is when the entire air volume of the room goes through the unit.

Air Changes per Hour  Room Size (Pollen CADR) Room Size (Smoke CADR)
1 3320 sq.ft. 2800 sq.ft.
2 1660 sq.ft.
1400 sq.ft.
3 1105 sq.ft. 930 sq.ft.
4 830 sq.ft. 700 sq.ft.

What room should I put it in?

It's best to put Aspen where you spend most of your time or where there are higher levels of pollution.  Most people put Aspen in the living room, kitchen, or bedroom.  If you only have one Aspen and a two story house, it's best to put it on the lower level because the natural airflow through a house is from bottom to top due to the stack effect.  This will allow the air in both the upstairs and downstairs rooms to be cleaned.

How often should I change the filters?

Every 12 months.  A light on the control will turn on when it's time to change the filters.  If you have excessive dust, from woodworking for example, you may need to change the Allergy Filter more often.

How do I change the filters?

The Owner's Manual (page 5) has instructions with diagrams on how to change the filters.  Simply unlatch the door handles, pull the old filters out, slide the new filters in, and replace the door.

How do I make the filter light go off?

After changing the filters, simply press and hold the filter reset button on the control panel for 5-10 seconds until the light goes off.

What fan speed should I keep it on?

We recommend using the highest fan speed that you can while not being bothered by the noise.  For most people this is around 3 or 4.  Higher fan speeds will clean more air but also be louder.

When should I turn the unit on?

You should always keep the unit on, even if it's on a low fan speed.  If it's off, it's not cleaning the air and protecting you from air pollutants.

What are the sound levels of Aspen?

Sound levels are actually a pretty involved topic, but I'll keep it simple here.

Technical answer:

There aren't defined standards for how to measure sound pressure levels for air purifiers, so when you see published numbers they can vary depending on where the microphones were placed in relation to the unit during the test.  We've had extensive testing done on Aspen for sound.  Here are the sound pressure levels by fan speed:

1 - 28.5 dBA
2 - 37.7 dBA
3 - 46.1 dBA
4 - 51.8 dBA
5 - 58.5 dBA
6 - 65.5 dBA
Practical answer:
I would describe the sound levels by fan speed as follows:
1 - Whisper quiet.
2 - Very quiet.  I use this setting on my Aspen in the bedroom while I'm sleeping.
3 - Moderate white noise.  I use this setting on my Aspen in the kitchen and I don't even notice the noise.
4 - Suitable for a large room.  It's a little too loud for me to put next to my desk, but we use two Aspens in our assembly area on fan speed 4.
5 - Getting louder on this level.
6 - Pretty loud.  Similar to having windows down in a car at 50mph.  I'd only use this if there was a very high level of pollution event, such as burning toast or vacuuming.

Is Aspen a solution to radon gas?

Aspen by itself is not a solution to radon gas. If a homeowner has radon, they still need a radon mitigation system. However, radon decay products (polonium, bismuth, and lead) are metals that can easily attach to dust and other particles in the air. Aspen will capture those dust particulates and any radioactive debris attached to it. In this way, Aspen can make a great addition to a radon mitigation system.

Can HEPA Filtration Remove Radon Decay Products?

Does Aspen remove CO2?

No!  Aspen does not remove CO2 from the air.

If I move Aspen from a space contaminated with dirty air to a new space, do I have to change the filters?

No.  If you move Aspen to a different room, any particulate matter that is trapped in the filters will stay in the filters and not contaminate the new room.  You only need to change the filters if they are very dirty and are blocking airflow.

Does Aspen remove the smell of fireplace wood smoke?

Wood smoke is made up of a mixture of particulates and gases. Aspen can remove any of the toxic soot particulates that can result from burning wood, but not all of the gases which are responsible for the smell. It can remove some of the gases with its carbon filter, but not all of them, so there may still be that smell of wood burning present. The particulates, which Aspen removes, are the component of smoke that causes negative health effects.
